What Is Lumi?
Lumi is a Raspberry Pi that automatically makes snowstorm predictions for the Utah Wasatch Front about two weeks in advance. Lumi’s accuracy varies from year to year, but currently sits at about 85% for the 2022-2023 season.
How Does Lumi Work?
Lumi tracks an oceanographic data buoy off the cost of Hawaii. This buoy is known to some as “The Powder Buoy.” Every day Lumi downloads the data from this buoy and analyzes it to make predictions. Predictions are issued 13 days in advance of the expected snowfall date.
Lumi is based around the Raspberry Pi and Python3. Lumi has a master station which does a lot of heavy calculations and analysis to process the wave data, and satellite stations that retrieve the forecast from the master station and displays it.
